VIL: Is basically precipitation velocities in a storm. The stronger the VIL typically the heavier the precipitation and/or larger the hail that is falling in the storm. Looking at this product is useful for finding those hail cores. It also is a good way to see what storm is getting stronger and what storm is weakening.

Dual Polarization Radar:

During recent months the National Weather Service has been upgrading their radars to dual polarization (aka ‘dual pol’). There are several notable benefits to this upgrade including the ability to determine precipitation types, better determine where large hail may be falling, etc. These benefits and how to use the different products available can be better described at the following link: http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/tools/radar/dualpol/.
